Benefits of an EMV Level 2 Letter of Approval for a SoftPOS Supplier
For SoftPOS suppliers, obtaining a EMV Level 2 Letter of Approval is a crucial step in the certification process, allowing them to undergo directly to the Level 3 / End-to-End Certification. But what exactly does this approval mean and why is it important?
What is an EMV Level 2 Letter of Approval?
The Letter of Approval is an EMV Level 2 Type Approval certification for Android CoTS devices. It can be named differently depending on the payment scheme (e.g. “Terminal Test Assessment Summary” for Mastercard). Defined by the payment schemes, it certifies the EMV Level 2 functional and interoperability and performance testing.
SoftPOS suppliers can choose two paths:
- Obtain this approval under their own names for a specific kernel, or
- Use an already EMV Level 2 Letter of Approval from a kernel supplier, capable of supplying it.
The Letter of Approval, when obtained from a kernel supplier, avoid to the SoftPOS SDK/solution supplier to:
- Require a deep knowledge of the EMV Level 2 (ICS definitions, internal testing, …)
- Develop a complex and required testing tool for the certification process,
- Spend time & money at laboratory by not running any debugging sessions and covering the tests costs
- Deal with the EMV Level 2 development instead of focusing on its core developments, MPoC certification and end-to-end testing.
